Ep. 16 Unconventional with Matthew Missimer
Welcome to EVOLVE Thru God! I would love it if you would spread the word - like, follow, share, and introduce EVOLVE thru God to people you know who are seeking in their own journey!
In Episode 16, we meet Matthew Missimer and learn of his Unconventional Calling Back to God. Matthew shared insights from his own spiritual journey, reflecting on his upbringing in the Roman Catholic Church and the disconnect he felt from a personal relationship with God. He described a pivotal moment in his life at age 37, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted him to reassess his values and the motivations behind his material possessions. This introspection led to a transformative road trip with his family, where they sought freedom and connection, ultimately resulting in a significant shift in Matthew's perspective on fatherhood and fulfillment.
The discussion also delved into Matthew's experiences with ayahuasca and the healing properties of psychedelics, emphasizing their potential benefits for mental health. He addressed the skepticism surrounding these practices, particularly from strict religious viewpoints, while citing scientific research that supports their therapeutic effects. Matthew underscored the importance of meditation in his life, sharing his commitment to daily practice and the challenges he faces in maintaining it while parenting. Angela expressed her support for his mindfulness practices, highlighting the role of gratitude in transforming one's perspective on life's challenges.
Matthew articulated the deeper emotional experience of gratitude, which he termed "grotosis," and how it can reshape one's understanding of adversity. He contrasted cultural attitudes toward gratitude, drawing from his experiences in Costa Rica, where community and nature foster a profound appreciation for life. The conversation culminated in Matthew's reflections on his book, "The Paradox of Having Your Shit Together," which chronicles his healing journey and the importance of supporting others in their spiritual growth. The exchange emphasized the collective awakening occurring in society and the significance of personal transformation in fostering empathy and understanding.
